IN FIFTY YEARS

Author Sola Odeh was born in Lagos, Nigeria. She spent her early years in Surulere in the heart of Lagos. She went for secondary education at Federal Government Girls College Benin City. Edo State. This was the first time Sola was exposed to food and culture that was different to the Yoruba culture she belonged to. She spent a year at the Ado Ekiti University, Ondo State. Due to incessant strikes, She migrated to the UK to finish her University education.

This drastic change in environment from her country and culture left her no choice but to find a way to keep her sanity while attempting to adapt and learn to live in her new country of residence in the United Kingdom. Having been raised a Christian, she went in search of an Anglican Church to attend and was shocked to see the vicar smoking and having a chat right outside the doors of the church. This was the first shock she received about how different the culture in the UK is compared to Nigeria. Religious leaders smoke and drink… which is usually a taboo for religious leaders back home in Nigeria.

shows her tenacity and determination not to allow the negative labels of single mum divorcee stop her from learning crucial life lessons that projected her into being the best version of herself.

She met and married her husband and had 4 children. Fifty Lessons In Fifty Years captures all she has learned on her life’s journey. The joys of meeting all the societal and cultural expectations; obtaining a degree from the university, buying a house, buying a car, getting married and having kids. The book explores Sola’s choice to prioritise her sanity over societal, family, religious and cultural expectations. Prioritising her mental health led to her divorce from a marriage of 17 years and subsequently raising her four children as a single parent.

She aspires to inspire others

She hopes to share all she’s learned as a beacon of encouragement for anyone going through similar issues.
